What to wear during your photo session

‘What do you want me to wear for the photo session?’ is something I get asked frequently. I answer that I find it most important that what you choose to wear is something you feel comfortable in. I won’t tell you exactly what color or kind of clothes to wear. No, look at your wardrobe and choose what clothes you feel are most suitable. In this post, I give you five tips for choosing your outfit.

Tip 1: wear something you feel comfortable in

Sounds obvious, right? To wear something you feel comfortable in… But often I hear people make their choice based on what looks good in the picture. I think I’d look good in pictures wearing a tiny red dress with a low neck. But would I feel good? No! I’d feel like I expose way too much skin, like it’s waaaay to tight. And I’d worry all the time if the dress doesn’t show too much of my thighs. Oh and are my boobs big enough to make this dress look good? You can image I might look good, but would look highly uncomfortable in this dress in pictures. Okay, this is an extreme example, but I hope you see what I am trying to tell you. Wear something you feel pretty, attractive, self-confident and comfortable wearing. If that’s a wide sweater, fine, wear it! The photo session is about capturing who you are, not what you could look like.

Tip 2: remember that we go into nature

I take you on an adventure in nature. This means that we’ll be on sandy, muddy and/or wet ground. I think heels are not suitable footwear in such places. Neither are white shoes or white pants. Choose outfits that you’d choose to wear on a Sunday afternoon walk in the forest. Shoes that you can walk on for some miles, clothes that are warm enough and don’t show every little piece of dirt.

Tip 3: choose natural colors for your outfit

I think it looks very nice in pictures if the outfits of my clients have colors that you might also find in nature. Think: pine green, grass yellow, etc. Google ‘natural color palette’ for some inspiration.

Tip 4: taking your lover with you? Match your outfits

Now, here’s a challenge: pick something that’s both comfortable and matching with the outfit of your lover. This doesn’t mean you have to wear the same colors, but one wearing bright orange and the other wearing bright purple might be a little too much… I suggest that you Google ‘natural color palette’ again for some examples of colors that work well together.

Tip 5: take your whole wardrobe with you

No, joking. But you can take a bag with extra outfits, you that you can change during the photo session. That way, we have a variety in locations, poses and outfits.

Still not sure what to wear? Feel free to send me an e-mail or give me a call.
