This year I’ll focus more on photographing elopements all over Europe. You’ll see me use this word often on my website, so I thought it would be good to explain to you what does it mean to elope. The dictionary defines “elope” as “run away secretly in order to get married”. In these more modern times, it’s way less about hiding your marriage for your parents or society. Today, eloping is way more romantic and often done for other reasons than parents not approving.
Eloping is for people that want something different than the traditional big wedding
Eloping couples avoid the big, traditional wedding and choose instead for a more intimate and maybe adventurous day. Elopements are more about you and your lover, allowing many intimate moments, without having to worry about the guests entertaining themselves and other stresses that a big wedding might bring. Eloping allows you to organize your day in such a way that it’s all about what and who you love. I can’t imagine myself having this wedding in a nice building with many guests and a huge party afterward. No, I rather say my vows on top of a mountain, with just two of our bests friends present and having a great time with the four of us. Wild camping, campfire, that outdoor feeling.
Eloping is all about YOU and the experience you want for your wedding day
Reasons to elope
Of course, people have different reasons to elope. I’ll share some with you:
- no need to worry about complicated family relations
- no endless guest list but just your most loved ones to be present at your ceremony
- less stress because you keep it smaller and you’re doing what you love (hiking, cycling, climbing, camping, picnicking, etc.)
- save a lot of money by not renting fancy buildings but using natural decor
- you want to start your marriage by doing what you like best to do together
Where to elope?
The best thing about eloping, I think, is that you can get married wherever you want. On that mountain that you climbed on your first holiday together. At that black sanded beach in Iceland where you felt so happy. At the shore of a lake with stunning views. On that sunny beach when it’s freezing back home. Closer to home at the place where you walk your dog every day. It’s all possible!
You can have your wedding ceremonie wherever you want!
But… can I still have my white dress?
No one ever said you can’t wear a wedding dress on top of a mountain. And you can still get your hair and make-up done by a professional. You can have your first look (in the stunning landscape!). You can have your wedding cake. There are endless possibilities to get married in the way you always dreamed of.
Can I legally marry wherever I want?
Unfortunately, it’s not possible in every country to get legally married wherever you want. In that case, you’d still have to go to a legal instance to get your marriage valid. A quick visit to the city hall and it’s all arranged.
It’s all about you!
Of course, many people will still prefer a traditional church + big party + many guests wedding. That’s okay! But for the people that dream of getting married in a Pride & Prejudice landscape or on a sunny beach: it’s possible! There is no need to constrain yourself in your thinking about your wedding. Allow yourself to dream and then make that dream come true <3
