I took these pictures of Lillian and Maikel during a course I followed with Sunfield Academy. Eliene, the owner, guides Dutch people who dream of a career as a photographer and she offers a 6 months course. I very well remember the moment I decided to sign up. I was stuck in another job I didn’t like, my relationship just ended and I had no place to live. I was feeling so unhappy and realized: my future will NOT be like this. Then I saw and advertisement by Eliene, of whom I never heard until that day, borrowed money and signed up. All I knew was that I wanted to give working as a photographer a chance, for I’d regret it if I never tried. Two months later I sat down next to five other girls for the first day of the course.
‘Bring a mood board showing your photography dream’, said the last e-mail before the first class. A good excuse to spend hours on the web, browsing through my favorite photographers’ pictures. They showed couples on an adventure in nature. I glued the pictures on a piece of paper and took it with me to the class. I looked at it and thought: looks nice, but totally unrealistic for me. But then I didn’t know Eliene yet… Eliene believes that dreams come true if you turn them into goals… and start living according to that. She told us to tell the world about our dream. I was desperate, and motivated by Eliene’s speech, so I followed her advice. Every time I mentioned that I wanted to be an outdoor photographer for couples to people, I almost pooped my pants. ‘That’s so unrealistic’, ‘you’re not good enough’ and ‘who would want your pictures’. Those were the responses I expected, because these were the things I was telling myself all day.
Three months later, I sat on the couch with two people who love Ireland. They told me that last time, after we had a drink in the Irish pub together, they had the exact same thought. ‘We want you to come with us to Ireland next summer’, they told me. I couldn’t believe my ears. Was this really happening? Apparently it was, because they booked my tickets soon after. That was the moment I started to believe in my own dream.
One month after that, I was in a Land Rover on a very uneven sandy road in a Dutch forest, together with Lillian and Maikel. All I could think was: this is what I want! Adventure! Nature! Outdoorsy people! This photo session really feels like the start of my career as a photographer for outdoor lovers.
(Oh and the photo session in Ireland was really my dream come true. You can find some pictures here).
